Volunteer

Are you looking for a way to give back to the community? Do you want to make new friends? Volunteer with Pennyworth! We are 100% volunteer-run and are always looking for new friends to join us.

There are several ways to volunteer your time and support Pennyworth. Volunteers can work in the shop, help with Pennyworth’s Fenton Street Market booth, price and sort donations, transport priced merchandise , complete small maintenance projects, or sell select items on eBay. If you don’t have time to volunteer but would still like to support Pennyworth, please consider donating your gently used items. If you would like to volunteer in any capacity, please send us a message on Facebook or Twitter. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Volunteer at the Shop

Currently, volunteers can work a morning shift from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm or an afternoon shift from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Tuesday through Saturda yat 949 Bonifant Street, Silver Spring, MD . We also are open until 8pm the first Friday of every month.

Typical duties at the shop include helping customers locate items, straightening shelves and racks, and conducting cash transactions at the front counter. No prior retail experience is necessary for this unpaid position. As a special perk, volunteers receive a 50% discount on all Pennyworth Shop purchases the day they volunteer.

Help at Pennyworth’s Fenton Street Market Booth

During the summer months, Pennyworth has a booth once a month at Fenton Street Market. It’s a lot of fun choosing items and running the booth at the market, but volunteers are needed for not only staffing the booth, but assisting with transport to and from the market, as well as setup and tear down. We love being out in the community and volunteers at the Fenton Street Market booth always have a great time and pick up a few treasures from other vendors!

Sort and Price Donations at Grace House

Volunteers meet in the Grace House basement behind Grace Episcopal Church to sort and price new donations. Volunteers meet both during the day and on some evenings. No prior experience is needed, and general pricing guidelines are provided. Volunteers can complete the entire shift sitting down.

Transport Priced Merchandise to the Pennyworth Shop

Sorted and priced items must be transported to the shop. Volunteers load the items in their cars, drive the items from Grace House to the Pennyworth Shop, and unload items at the shop.

Complete Maintenance Projects at the Pennyworth Shop

Past maintenance projects include painting the walls and ceiling of the shop, installing new carpeting, repairing the air conditioner unit, and installing rods and curtains for a dressing room area. If you are handy with tools this would be a great fit!

Sell Select Items on eBay

Occasionally the Pennyworth Shop receives unusual items that sell well on eBay. Volunteers research a market price for the item, post the item to eBay, and handle shipping and payment. Volunteers must have experience selling items on the internet.
